Half day or full day trips with Nick Ashby - Table Mountain guide

HIKES UP THE ICONIC

RIGHT FACE TO

THE UPPER CABLE STATION

FIRM FAVORITE ~ Platteklip Gorge

Take the old stone path to the top. This classic way up offers a stiff cardio workout, taking you over streams, it ziggzags up into the gorge. Choice route for the less experienced.  Catch the cable car or walk down.  2.5 to 4 hours.

A TRICKIER TREK ~ India Venster

'Trek' means pull in Afrikaans. India Venster is a steep and often multi-limbed scramblesome trek up beneath the cableway, and round through the top of Blinkwater ravine. Catch the cable car or walk down.   2- 5 hours

THE ATLANTIC SEABOARD ROUTES

Ascend via the Twelve Apostles

Various trailheads dotted along the Pipe Track launch you up to the lesser travelled Middle Table.

Follow these paths to explore historic dams, and hidden valleys that are home to disas in season, and rare frogs which sun themselves in fern-lined streams.

Hike back to end at your starting point; or branch off and hike to the cable station; or journey over down the eastern flanks. There's also a south exit, near Hout Bay.

Most of these hikes range from 5 - 8 hours.

THE EASTERN FLANKS

SKELETON GORGE

                 or

NURSEREY RAVINE

Take one of these shaded ways from Kirstenbsosch, up to the Middle Table, explore up there, and then go down one of many routes on the same side. Or head on up to the Upper Cable station.  Or, after a picnic, cross over and take one of the Twelve Apostles routes down.

Between 4 and 7 hours.

There also are shorter & picturesque walks and scrambles to choose from - excellent for 4- 5 hour half day hikes.

DEVIL'S PEAK

This massif jutting out of Table Mountain offers unique views of Cape Town from a thousand meters high. That's if you choose to summit.

Or skip the final push to the very top, and reach it's lovely contour paths, crossing rocky streams and gorges high above the City Bowl where sugar-birds hang out in protea groves.

With Table Mountain as a dramatic backdrop, you can take brief scrambles to historic vantage points, and caves still used for worship.

Between 2 - 6 hours

Many ways to hike Table Mountain

For a quick excursion ascend its iconic right face. The city and Atlantic seaboard views surround you. Then return by cable car.

Or experience the abundant variety of plant life by mounting through one of the forested gorges above Kirstenbosch Botantical Gardens.

Picnic in shade near the reservoirs; take in the tranquillity of the place.

Descend via one of several paths.

Or push on to the cable station. Have a drink or a meal there. Save your legs by taking the cable car down.

Staying in the city centre or on the nearby coast? Then several routes are conveniently approached via the Twelve Apostles foothills to get you onto the Back Table - and down again via a different route.
